Can Your HPLC Column Do This? Cholesterol 10 Undecenoate on TYPE-C Silica Page 6 On this page you see the structure of the liquid crystal cholesterol, which is bonded to a short carbon chain via a polar embedded, ester linkage, and with the carbon chain terminating in a double bond, which allows the attachment to the TYPE-C Silica silica-hydride surface. This phase therefore offers several unique features: a planar lower surface, with a 2 dimensional upper surface (on the cholesterol moeity). Both sides of this molecule are in close proximity to a linear alkane chain with the intermediate ester linkage. Because of this configuration it is anticipated that this phase will have the ability to differentiate analytes based on molecular shape and functionality as compared to conventional C8 and C18 etc alkane phases. MicroSolv research suggests that shape recognition with UDC-Cholesterol, for instance, with female hormone steroids used in birth control pills, occurs only when using methanol on methanol containing mixed eluents at temperatures between 0 - 15 degrees C.
TYPE-C Silica phase synthesis flexibility has made custom made client designed phases a possibility worth thinking about...?
